republicanism illuminates spectacular fireworks

In talking about the American Revolution–patriotism as republicanism, Federalist 54 says, “…if the laws were to restore the rights which have been taken away, the Negroes could no longer be refused an equal share of representation with the other inhabitants.” On the one hand, we see that republican freedom lamented slavery, and so the Revolution was about “home rule.” On the other hand, Publius argued that the ’76 Revolution was not about rights being taken away… but the freedom that was inherent, unalienable, and God-given.

This 4th of July, I’m sure that republicans shall be glad to celebrate Gay Rights in America… to celebrate the freedom that has been rightfully observed by the people, for the people, and of the people. For more than two centuries, the Republic of the United States has matured.

Happy Independence Day!
